The argument, heard by phone, came into being 30 days after Justice Clarence Thomas, accompanied by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., seemed to urge the court to reconsider the 2015 choice, Obergefell v. Hodges, saying it stigmatized people of faith whom objected to marriage that is same-sex.
